A design challenge that was presented in a class at DePaul University was to digitally illustrate someone in vector form in Adobe Illustrator. As a fan of the television show, The Good Place, I decided to illustrate Kristen Bell, who plays the main character, Eleanor, on the show.

Process

After I selected who I wanted to illustrate, I went online to find an image of her. I took the image that I found of Kristen Bell into Photoshop and turned it black and white. Then, I posterized it using three tones. I printed off the edited photo and traced it. I wanted to stylize the photo and simplify it; which I did by editing the photo and tracing it. Once the tracing was complete, I took it into Illustrator and used the pen tool to complete the piece.

Reflection

I am more than thrilled with the outcome of this piece. I like how I took a photograph and didn't immediately take it into illustrator; instead I made some stylistic choices and made the work my own. The next steps for this piece would be to change the cropping of the image and create portraits for the rest of the cast of The Good Place.
