Music as Illustration: EDM

When someone thinks about music, how we represent it physically isn't the first thought we have. I was presented with that thought and created a visual representation of Electric Dance Music, also known as EDM. The piece is completed using illustrator and features inspiration from Spring Awakening, a Chicago EDM festival, repetitive elements, and a speaker. These elements and colors create a loud and layered representation of Electronic Dance Music.

Process

I started out my process by figuring out what elements I wanted to include in the piece. I knew about Spring Awakening, an EDM music festival located in Chicago; so I started my research there. One of the stages used was a huge influence on the piece and inspired the triangle portion of it. The center of the piece is a speaker, which is essential to an EDM concert. The repetitive lighting bolts highlight the repeating, in your face elements in the music. I sketched out a few ideas and these elements in my sketchbook. Finally, the light in the background is similar to the lasers and lights an EDM show would have.

Reflection

This is one of my favorite pieces that I have created for many different reasons. It captures what EDM music means to me; the colors, repetition, and visual noise all translate well. The pattern is engaging and relates to the rhythm and beat found within the music. With EDM being my favorite genre, I am thrilled that this is one of the pieces of work I am most proud of.
