Design

I divide my work into two categories, one of which is what I label as design. How it differs from Illustration, is that design has more of a focus on combining text and imagery to get a clear point. It has more of a focus of publication design and the use of type.

Being tasked by Emergo by UL to think about health and design in the future, I created the fictional project of SmartWalk. These are a few of the pages from the book that highlights the project, but feel free to download the PDF of the whole process book.

Being tasked with taking a Wikipedia article of the album Parallel Lines by Blondie, this poster was created in my Publication Design class at DePaul University.

One Design challenge that was presented to me was to create a Record cover, back, and stickers on each side of the record. I was informed of the name of the record, artist, and then listened to the album itself. I then created a series of collages reflecting various parts of the album. I then had to take one of those collages and create the full album artUsing the idea of the narrative and the work created, I was able to create a complete record cover.

Being presented with an article about Nirvana, I was tasked to create spreads for a magazine. I was limited to five spreads, one for the cover and the rest for the body. I was given a specific article and very little information to see what inspiration would strike. If you want to see the spreads themselves, feel free to download the PDF to take a closer look.

This is a poster based on the music and scores by Philip Glass; I wanted to capture is flowing and repetitive melodies within a poster. I wanted the imagery bold, but still reflect his music and his namesake. Feel free to download the PDF of the work to view the typography and information up close.

This is a hand lettering piece that was digitized and put over a stock photo. The work was inspired by art deco typefaces and shows my sketching process for lettering.

Latte Love Lettering

As my Capstone at DePaul University, I wanted to pay tribute to the Midwest accent. I compared different people saying a similar word or phrase, converted it into audio waveforms, and compared them. The piece as a whole, makes an abstract soundwave of "ope" which I call the peak Midwestern phrase. This work takes on the challenge of placing something that only lives in an auditory space and puts it on the printed or digital page.
